King George VI Building, Newcastle University
Dome provided expert Cost Management services to Newcastle University for their planned works to the King George VI building to simultaneously decarbonise the facility whilst dealing with structural defects.
In the spring of 2021 Newcastle University accelerated its target for achieving net zero from 2040 to 2030; consequently it allocated funds to support achievement of the target. In preparing the next phase of its Net Zero programme the University focussed on the major emitters within their built estate and therefore the most effective carbon reduction projects.
King George VI Building, which is Grade II listed, was identified to take a primarily ‘fabric first’ approach to reducing energy consumption and associated CO2 emissions, in parallel with the repair of structural defects to maximise the use of the building and future proof it in the medium term.
Dome worked alongside Sir Robert McAlpine and the design team led by GSS Architecture to develop a series of proposals to address the University’s brief. The proposals included cathodic protection to the existing frame, roof replacement, improvements to fire escape stairs, repointing works, window repairs and mechanical ventilation works.
Dome provided Cost Management services to Newcastle University. We added significant Higher Education, refurbishment, decarbonisation and two-stage tendering expertise to the team. We worked closely with the design team and main contractor to determine an appropriate scope to respond to the needs of the client brief.
