Construction Skills Centre Expansion: New College Durham

With growing interest from prospective students, New College Durham is expanding its successful Construction Centre of Excellence by transforming the adjoining warehouse into additional practical teaching space. Dome previously delivered PM, QS and EA services on Phase 1, which opened in 2024.

The design for this next phase has been led by Ryder Architecture, with civil and structural input from Jasper Kerr Consulting and MEP design by TGA Consulting Engineers LLP. Early investigations identified the need for foundation strengthening to support a new mezzanine floor – work that has now been successfully completed by BCE NORTHERN LIMITED. Main works have since commenced on site, with Meldrum Group appointed as the main contractor following a competitive tender in late 2025.

We’re pleased to see strong early momentum on site, with initial activity focused on insulating and lining the warehouse to enhance thermal performance, improve comfort, and reduce long-term operational costs and carbon emissions for the College.

The project will begin to take shape in the coming months with the installation of the new steel mezzanine, delivering significant additional teaching space.

Completion is expected in August, ready for the start of teaching in September.
